UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock headlined a significant birthday gathering today, although some folks may dispute the reason for the celebration. The festivities commemorated the 40th anniversary of the day he and a team of researchers first transferred data between two behemoth computers using a 15-foot cable.
According to Yahoo!, Kleinrock said, "It's the 40th year since the infant Internet first spoke." He revealed that the baby-Web's first word was, "LO," Source: Switched RSS Feed

Netbook Battery Tests: Windows XP vs Windows 7

Prior to the final release of Microsoft Windows 7, there some question as to what the new operating system would do for battery life on laptops. At that time, I felt it was too early to make any judgments, simply because final hardware drivers and power management utilities weren’t available. Now that Windows 7 is available, most vendors have provided software updates, so it’s a good time to check in on this. I spent yesterday running a Battery Eater test on my Toshiba NB205 netbook and Source: jkOnTheRun RSS Feed

HoMedics Restore Water Purification Uses UV Light to Kill Bacteria

HoMedics has turned water filtration on its ear today with the release of the Restore, a complete water purification system in a pitcher. Restore will provide cleaner and supposedly better tasting tap water by utilizing germ-killing Ultraviolet (UV) Clean Technology to remove bacteria and viruses with a filtration system to reduce metals, chlorine (taste and odor), and other pollutants. Restore’s UV Clean Technology utilizes UV light in the C spectrum to kill most of this bacteria.Source: Chip Chick RSS Feed

First Poster and Details For Luc Besson’s Adele Blanc-Sec

A little bit Indiana Jones, a little bit Tintin and a little bit Hellboy - and Euroapcorp, should you wish, you can have that tagline for your poster.

Luc Besson is moving fast on his new film Les Aventures Extrodinaire d’Adele Blanc-Sec (The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec, but likely to be just Adele Blanc-Sec when it crosses the Atlantic). From the various bits and pieces of info I can gather, Besson started shooting in Mid August and is now heading into postSource: SlashFilm RSS Feed

have one for the road with the motorcycle grip bottle opener

This is one of those gadgets that’s funny for like 5 minutes – a bottle opener that looks like a motorcycle’s grip. It revs up when you open a bottle with it! Yay. Awesome.

Open a bottle of your favorite beer! Vrooom! Or a miniature bottle of your favorite whiskey! Vrooom! Or grape-flavored Fanta! Vr…ooom? The motorcycle grip bottle opener sells for $10 (USD) at Drinking Stuff. Batteries included.

Watching U2 Live on YouTube

YouTube is striking closer and closer to having a live-streaming offering of its own, experimenting tonight with a live stream of a U2 concert. The stream started at 8:30 PT with crowd shots and a skit where The Edge says the concert is going out to “millions or maybe even billions of eyeballs watching us on TV” and Bono explains that it’s actually online. “It’s YouTube — it’s on Google — it’s very big.” The actual music kicked off at 9, probably too late for the event to Source: NewTeeVee RSS Feed

Soon, parents can dump those embarrassing child leashes for a new GPS device that keeps tabs on their young ones. Simply strap the Insignia 'Little Buddy Child Tracker' to your little rug-rat (tape should work), or you could just slide it into a backpack or lunchbox, and send him or her out into the world. According to Navigadget, checking up on them is easy, too. Using a smartphone or computer, you'll just visit a Web site that will show their current location Source: Switched RSS Feed

iPhone App Monitors MiFi 3G Usage [jkOnTheRun]

Don’t ask me how I’ve held out from getting a MiFi, but somehow I have — even after this great review. Like James, many of you have purchased one of these little 3G devices that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot bubble around you. And because that hotspot supports multiple devices on one 3G account, that 5GB bandwidth cap can loom in the back of your mind. If you use an iPhone or iPod Touch to leverage that 3G connection, a free app I read about at GottaBeMobile should help.

Mobile Tech Minutes — Run Mac Programs Under Windows 7, Sort of [jkOnTheRun]

Today is Windows 7 launch day and it is appropriate to show how I run Mac programs on the Windows 7 desktop. I know, you can’t really do that, but if you are running Windows 7 under Parallels Desktop on a Mac you can. In this video I show how I can access any Mac program from the Windows 7 Start Menu, and even how I pin oft-used Mac programs to the Windows 7 taskbar. It’s a slick way to run Mac programs without leaving the Windows environment on a Mac. Happy Windows 7 launch day!

Late-night revelers and iron-sight junkies situated near London should note that Activision plans a proper launch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at Leicester Square, on the night before the game's November 10 launch on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Hip square visitors to-be can gape at the shooter's action on the nearby ODEON's cinema screen, purchase it from the HMV Trocadero at the stroke of midnight, and then give Tom Cruise a solid high five on the way home.

Witness the iPhone-ized Future Of Auto Show Displays [Car Design]

You just know that flat screens with icons in a grid are the zeitgeist when even a carmaker’s display screen looks like an iPhone.

There were a few years around the turn of the millennium when a wild spectrum of appliance manufacturers were inspired by the translucent, colored plastics used by Apple lead designer Jonathan Ive for the original iMac. The future, as evidenced by a casual glimpse at household appliances, was about to turn bondi blue.

modern warfare on the xbox 360 (literally)

Modding master EvilDan is the only person who would dis this Modern Warfare 2 mod. On his deviantART page, he says he’s not thrilled with it. Why? Beats me. Must be a case of maker’s melancholy.

Yeah, see, while this isn’t quite as elaborate as some of EvilDan’s mods, it’s still pretty incredible, with that peekaboo case and the silhouette. The other side looks good, too. Love that metallic paint!

Nissan's Eporo robot car heads to the races, slow and steady

Curious to see just how Nissan's crash-resistant Eporo "robot car" is faring? We caught a presentation at CEATEC today, and besides looking infinitely more adorable than last year's model, it also did a good job keeping things out of its personal bubbles in its slow-moving travels -- it even managed to avoid some of our obnoxious hand waving just over the course's boundaries. See it for yourself in video after the break.

Trees named “Tyranny and Freedom” – which tree in the photo below is the older one?

While researching for one of WUWT’s  previous posts by Caleb Shaw, which is a must read essay on the simple things that can explain tree ring records to scientists that have never actually touched the tree or understood its local growth environment, I came across this photo of two larch trees in the Kotuykan river area of Siberia, not far from the Yamal peninsula. The photographer stated that an accompanying  scientist who is familiar with the region named the two treesSource: Watts Up With That? RSS Feed
